Memory of Roots
The veins of life resemble the root systems of plants, carrying traces of the past and burying them deep within time. Memory of Roots is a series of plant sculptures created with black clay, exploring the cycle of life, human memory, and rebirth after destruction. These works break the logical patterns of natural plant growth, presenting displaced forms where branches, leaves, and roots intertwine in an irrational space, as if time and order are collapsing and reorganizing.
The charcoal-black clay not only symbolizes the stillness of life’s end but also hints at the fertile soil that nurtures new beginnings. It resembles both the ashes left after a fire and the deeply buried traces of memory, solidifying the passage of time. In these sculptures, plants no longer follow natural laws but instead extend, twist, and root themselves into unknown territory in a paradoxical manner. This disordered growth serves as a metaphor for the nonlinear nature of human memory, some experiences dissolve into oblivion, while others resurface, subtle yet persistent within the chaos of time.
